TATE-KEN (Shield and sword) |
There are few expmples for the use of the tate or shield in Japan, which I observe is because the sword has, ever since the Momoyama period, been understood to be handled by two hands. On the other hand, however, the shield is highly developed as part of swordsmanshiop in areas like Europe or Africa. It is a rational means for fighting as it enables simultaneous attack and protection. |
